About Us

Care built around where you actually live

A&M Defining Purpose, Inc. is a mental health services provider based in Newport News, Virginia. We deliver counseling, skill building, and community-based support in the places people actually live: homes, neighborhoods, and daily routines, rather than a clinic on the other side of town.

We serve people who have been underserved. LGBTQ+ individuals. Veterans. Neurodivergent adults and youth. Families navigating systems that were not built with them in mind. Affirming care is not a specialty line for us; it is the baseline.

We believe in defining purpose, not prescribing it. Our name is the work. We do not arrive with your goals already written. We help you find them, name them, and build the structure that supports them.

Successful Empowerment

You are the one doing the work. We build the conditions that make the work possible, then hand the wheel back to you.

Anchoring Peace

Stability comes before progress. We start by helping you find steady ground, in your own home, on your own terms.

Courageous Perseverance

Recovery is not a straight line. We stay with you through the parts that are not linear, and we do not treat a setback as a failure.

Mindfulness

Awareness is a skill, not a personality trait. We teach it, practice it, and build it into daily life.

Our Symbol

Why the semicolon

Our mark is an infinity symbol with a semicolon inside it. In writing, a semicolon is used when a sentence could have ended and the author chose to continue it instead. In mental health, it has become the symbol for exactly that decision.

The infinity around it is the neurodiversity symbol, and its colors carry the pride flag. Both are deliberate. Everyone is welcome here, and no one's story ends at the hard part.

Our Services

Five ways we work with you

All delivered in your home or your community, rather than a waiting room. We accept Medicaid.

Intensive In-home Counseling Services

Consistent, high-frequency therapeutic support delivered directly in the family home. Designed for youth and families working through significant behavioral or emotional challenges, with the goal of keeping the family stable and together.

Mental Health Skill Building Services

One-on-one support building the practical skills that sustain independent living: managing medication, maintaining a household, keeping appointments, navigating benefits, handling daily stress, and building routines that hold.

Assertive Community Treatment (ACT)

A full multidisciplinary team, coordinated around one person, available for individuals living with serious mental illness who need more than scheduled appointments can provide. The team comes to you.

Mental Health Counseling

Individual therapeutic counseling with a licensed clinician, focused on your goals and your pace.

Peer Support

Support from someone with lived experience of mental health recovery. Not a clinician above you; a person beside you who has walked the road and can tell you what the next mile looks like.
